Long Island textile artist and fashion designer of wearable art, Madona Cole-Lacy, will participate as a vendor at a conference, "Defining Culture Through Dress: Individual and Collective Identities", presented by the Hofstra University Cultural Center on April 19 & 20, 2007, from 9:00AM-5:00PM at the University's Student Center. Madona Cole Originals one-of-a-kind wearable art fashions and accessories will be on display and available for purchase, including her recently introduced Dignity Collection of headpieces. Mrs. Cole-Lacy creates headpieces which are designed to cater to the needs of women experiencing hair loss, in particular from chemotherapy. Her eclectic collection of handcrafted headpieces, offers a solution to those who simply want to look elegant as they "cover up" on "bad hair" days. There are pieces which are ideal for church, synagogue and formal occasions that are an exciting addition to the wardrobe of all hat lovers. "I draw on the common bond and awareness of social, emotional and health issues of women as I address their needs through customized wardrobe enhancement with Madona Cole Originals pieces", says the artist

At 10:45-11:30 AM on Saturday April 21, Mrs. Cole-Lacy will model her unique brand of church headwear during Plenary Session XI: Ladies Church Hats 'celebrating the tradition of African American women and their Sunday finery; the wearing of church hats as a combination of faith and fashion'. Other models include ladies of the Women's Ministry of Union Baptist Church, Hempstead, New York.

Mrs. Cole-Lacy originally from Sierra Leone West Africa, studied art and design in both England and the United States. Her wearable art, which is created by applying her original fabric designs to silk and other fine fabrics, incorporates influences from various cultures. The fabric designs are a combination of techniques such as hand dyeing, hand screening, tie dyeing, batik and hand stamping which have been applied by the artist's exclusive methods.
